As you read through the Gospel of John, you may find you have questions… questions about a particular verse or passage, its background or context. I actually got to study the Bible for my college degrees… and I’d love to get more use out of all the expensive textbooks and commentaries my professors made me buy! :) So feel free to ask. You can post your questions in the comments section or email me through the Contact page on this site. If I don’t already know the answer, I’ll look it up for you. And I’ll share what I find here, for others who may be wondering the same thing.
Bible Study Questions:
This week in our Virtual VBS, we’ve been reading the first three chapters of John. Here are some questions to help you reflect on what you’ve read. You might want to answer them in a journal or notebook.
1) Who is Jesus? Look up the following verses and list each of the different names or titles or phrases that describe Him. (Some verses have more than one.)
John 1:1 John 1:41
John 1:9 John 1:49
John 1:14 John 1:51
John 1:29 John 3:31
John 1:33 John 3:34
John 1:34
2) In just a few brief chapters, we see Jesus interacting with a lot of different people in a lot of different circumstances – in the wilderness, at a wedding reception, at the Temple in broad daylight, and in secret in the middle of the night. Think about each of these encounters. What do we learn from them about who Jesus is and what He is like?
The Calling of Andrew and Peter (1:40-42)
The Calling of Philip and Nathanael (1:43-51)
The Wedding at Cana (2:1-11)
The Money Changers and the Pharisees (2:12-25)
A Conversation with Nicodemus (3:1-21)
3) What’s the one thing you want to remember most from this week’s study — the one thought, the one idea, the one encouragement you want to take with you from here?
(I like to borrow Kay Arthur’s acronym for these things: “LFL” – Lesson for Life – and write it next to the appropriate verses in my Bible or journal.)
